On the night from January 6 to 7, the people of Kazakhstan, along with the entire Orthodox world, are celebrating Christmas. This day has long been a holiday in our country, regardless of nationality and religion. The noise of bells is announcing the arrival of Christmas. Just like the New Year, Christmas is rich for traditions, customs and symbols. The indispensable attributes of Christmas are the Christmas wreath, a symbol of the light that comes into the world with the birth of Christ, the bells, which are necessary for the expulsion of the evil spirit, the Christmas candles, with the help of which the forces of darkness and cold could be expelled, as well as the colorful Christmas cards. On this day people give up some useful things. Girls traditionally arrange divination. It is also advisable to visit the family, friends and relatives. This is their holiday. Unfortunately, one of the main Christmas traditions, the merry Christmas carols is becoming obsolete. Today it is possible to meet the people who make carol singing only in the rural areas of Kazakhstan. In connection with the introduction of amendments to the Law “On labour”, the Orthodox Christmas in Kazakhstan is declared a public holiday.
